정태완 작가는 회화의 평면을 건축의 일부에서 분리된 파편으로 바라보며, 실제 사물의 크기와 건축적 제작 방식이 회화 안에서 작동하는 방식을 탐구해왔다. 기존의 테라초 작업에서 표면의 재현에 주목했다면, 최근에는 1:1 스케일을 중심으로 회화가 대상을 묘사하는 방식뿐 아니라 그 대상의 물리적 조건을 화면에 옮기는 방법을 구체화하고 있다.

이번 사부작 레지던시에서 정태완은 이러한 관심을 타일 시리즈와 쿼들리벳(Quodlibet) 시리즈로 이어가는데, 타일 시리즈는 포맥스를 일정한 크기로 재단하고 마치 타일을 시공하듯 화면에 부착하는 방식을 취한다. 이런 과정을 통해 사물의 표면을 이미지로 옮기는 데 그치지 않고, 즉물성과 물리적 조건을 회화라는 형식 내에서 조각적으로 탐구한다. 

한편 쿼들리벳 시리즈는 회화의 평면 자체를 사물이 부착되는 표면으로 다루는데, 이번 레지던시에서 작가는 표준 규격인 A4 용지가 벽에 붙어 있는 듯한 형상과 질감을 평면 위에 묘사함으로써, 1:1 스케일로 재현된 A4 용지라는 화면 속 대상의 크기를 관객이 직관적으로 인식하도록 한다.

사부작 레지던시에서 진행 중인 두 시리즈를 통해, 작가는 회화의 화면을 단순히 이미지를 재현하는 평면이 아니라, 실제 크기와 물질적 구조, 시각적 환영이 관계 맺는 장소로 다룬다.

Taewan Jeong treats the picture plane as a fragment detached from a part of architecture, exploring how the actual size of objects and architectural fabrication operate within painting. His earlier terrazzo works focused on the representation of surfaces; his recent practice centers on 1:1 scale, addressing not only how painting depicts its subject but how that subject‘s physical conditions are carried onto the picture surface.

At the Sabujak Residency he continues these concerns in two series. In the Tile series, Foamex is cut to uniform sizes and attached to the surface as one would lay tile—an inquiry into objecthood and physical condition, pursued sculpturally within the form of painting. In the Quodlibet series, the picture plane itself becomes the surface to which objects are affixed: the artist depicts an A4 sheet as though stuck to a wall, so that viewers intuit the size of the reproduced object—an A4 sheet at 1:1 scale.

Across both series, the artist treats the surface of painting not as a plane that reproduces images but as a site where actual scale, material structure, and visual illusion meet.
